Lets Talk Fashion (artificial) Intelligence

Fashion Intelligence Vs Artificial Intelligence

Fashion Intelligence = having a sense of style and knowledge in what to wear and what NOT to wear. This definition is catered by me and me only. Now lets talk about Artificial intelligence before we actually get into the real manner of things (haha). A proper definition of artificial intelligence would be described as, “To proceed on the basis of the conjecture that every aspect of learning or any other feature of intelligence can in principle be so precisely described that a machine can be made to stimulate it” (Dick, 2019). In other words, it is the idea that a machine can mimic human like actions for the sole purpose of becoming more efficient (or atleast that is how I interpret it).

Artificial Intelligence in the Fashion World

Artificial Intelligence in the Fashion World permits in different factors, whether it is manufacturing, design or merchandising. A factor that tends to get overlooked when it comes to artificial intelligence is enhancing the customer experience. Augmented reality can be a solution for customers that want to pre-order an outfit or need inspiration but cannot visually imagine it in their own head. Augmented reality stems from artificial intelligence in the sense that a machine is doing the imagination for you. An example of how augmented reality can work in the fashion world would be having a machine set up in a bridal store where the user stands in front of the machine with their lingerie garment and asks for a specific type of dress with hypothetical alterations. The dress would be part of the roster in the machine and can easily be placed on top of the user using the virtual screen. This will help envision the dress with alternations without the cost of the seamstress actually doing the physical labor of the work before the client is even sure about the alternations. It also helps give a vision to the client for what they want in the dress and can benefit both sides of the party.

Looking more into depth about this idea, it can also increase customer personalization. The customer will be more inclined to purchasing a product that is targeted solely for them. This will benefit the company in the long run as well because artificial intelligence can also be collecting users data and have it stored to understand what kind of personalization fits them best in the future.

So yes, I am a marketing major and it probably shows with the ideas that I came up with for how artificial intelligence can improve the fashion industry from the clients point of view. Although robots taking over is not the ideal move for 2023, it does not have to be looked at in a negative way. Artificial intelligence is more than just robots replacing physical and mental work that humans have been customized to do, it is more so about enhancing work productivity and achieving possibilities that are not possible with man made work. It is important to remember the value of man made work but to open our minds to see how artificial intelligence can benefit both sides of the party when the opportunity arises.
